Star Wars Jedi Survivor pushes the PS5 and Xbox Series X to their limits

Not even the Force can help the PS5 and Xbox Series X with Star Wars Jedi Survivor: ‘next-gen’ consoles are too fair.

The new Star Wars Jedi Survivor game, developed by Respawn Entertainment, recently launched to mixed reactions. Although the game is considered a high-quality triple-A, based on the Unreal Engine 4, it has faced a lot of criticism for its technical problems, especially on the latest generation consoles such as Sony’s PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series X from Microsoft.

Low definition or choppy frame rates

A technical analysis video posted on YouTube by Digital Foundrreveals that the console versions of the game suffer from poor performance, even on the most powerful platforms. In fashion performance on the PS5, the game features extremely low definition, ranging from 648p to 864p. The image is then upscaled to 1440p using AMD’s FSR 2 technology. However, the choppy frame rates on the PS5 and Xbox Series X leave something to be desired, with large fluctuations of up to 45fps instead of a steady 60fps.

The mode quality Star Wars Jedi Survivor on PS5 offers a better experience, with native resolution up to 1440p and upscaling to 4K. However, the performance is sometimes lower than 30 frames per second. Thankfully, owners of modern TVs with VRR are spared annoying picture tearing.

It is important to mention that ray-tracing cannot be disabled, with the exception of Xbox Series S where it is not possible to activate it. Ray-tracing is used for global illumination and reflections in-game. The ability to turn it off could have offered an improved frame rate in performance mode, allowing players to enjoy a smoother experience on their consoles.

A major patch is rolling out across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X, aimed to improve game performance. However, a major performance boost should not be expected. This patch mainly focuses on fixing many bugs and issues that players are experiencing.

Can we still call these consoles “next-gen”? The latest generations of graphics cards, whether from Nvidia or AMD, greatly exceed their performance. When can we expect to see a PlayStation 5 Pro arrive?
