Not all remakes go well, while that of Demon’s Souls and The Last of Us Part 1 performed well, the same is not true for that of the famous and ancient Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic. (KOTOR), originally released in 2003. The announcement of the remake last year excited fans, but since then the game has had a string of disappointments.
The dark side of development
A few weeks ago, we learned that the development of Kotor was put on hold indefinitely, after the dismissal of several members of the development team. The reasons behind these departures have not been clarified. Now, new information comes from Bloomberg once again. Initially developed by the Texan studio of Aspyr Media, Kotor is now in the hands of one of the branches of Saber Interactive based in Eastern Europe. The two studios have the particularity of having the same parent company, Embracer Group AB.
Embracer Group mentioned the transfer indirectly in its financial report a few days ago, when it indicated that a AAA game in development in one of their branches changed developers, without mentioning which game was affected. The reason given was to ensure that the required level of quality is ensured for this title. It was speculated that this was Star Wars Knight of the Old Republic, but has since been confirmed by an inside source.
Star Wars Kotor is a large and complex game, which gives the possibility of creating your own character, which then becomes a Jedi. This RPG mixes elements of previous Bioware titles, like Baldur’s Gate and Neverwinter Nights for combat mechanics, with a more action twist. We are accompanied by a small group of various races and origins, as we travel from one planet to another of the Republic, aboard a ship that is reminiscent of the famous Millennium Falcon. .
It’s not necessarily very well known, but Embracer Groupe is the parent company of THQ and Deep Silver, whose new title is about to be released: the Saints Row reboot. The feedback from the press ranging from lukewarm at best, to very negativeexpect it to deal a noticeable blow to them, should the game prove to be a commercial failure, which is likely to come to that point.
