Star Wars Outlaws has just revealed a new trailer with, as a bonus, a release date. All of this tells us more about Kay’s motivations, as well as the enemies who will stand in her way. Want a complete update on Ubisoft’s gaming history? We analyzed the trailer.
It’s now official: Star Wars Outlaws, the open world action-adventure game from Ubisoft Massive, will be released August 30 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The news has just fallen, as part of a new trailer which expands on the plot of the title. Lucky people that we are, we were able to watch the trailer in advance and arrive here, now, right away with a little analysis of what it hides! So, what kind of trouble has Kay, our bandit heroine, gotten herself into?
Between The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi
First, a little context. Outlaws sets its scene between the 5th and 6th episode of Star Wars, namely theEmpire Strikes Back (at the end of which Luke learns that Darth Vader is his father) and Return of the Jedi (where the Rebels finally manage to beat the Empire). It is therefore a period when the Empire, the big bads led by Palpatine, are at their peak. The group won a first battle against the Rebels, they are everywhere in the galaxy, but nevertheless remain distracted by Skywalker and his friends who could return at any time. Brief, the Empire remains on guard and cannot have eyes everywhere, which will encourage the emergence of powerful criminal organizations – called the Syndicates (or more generally “the Underworld”). Among them, we find the Pykes, the Hutts, or the Scarlet Dawn. “It’s the opportunity to make millions, it’s the golden age of the Underworld” announces in the trailer a certain Sliro, at the head of “Zerek Besh”, a union mentioned in the Star Wars Expanded Universe. It is – in particular – he who will make life difficult for Kay, the heroine of the Ubisoft game.
Kay Vess, a heroine who wants to redeem her freedom
The era ofOutlaws, “It’s a time when the underworld is thriving and there’s no better situation for an established or up-and-coming scoundrel to cut their teeth,” summarizes Julian Gerighty, creative director at Massive. This is where Kay Vess comes in… We don’t know much about her past, but in the trailer, she is presented as a “new scoundrel” who has however attacked a big fish: Sliro. “You double-crossed him, the leader of Zerek Besh, and now he wants to eliminate you,” says a character to Kay. “Steal his fortune and buy your freedom.”
We therefore understand that “the biggest heist of the Outer Rim” that Kay must sign in order to be at peace is to steal Sliro’s money, that is to say the loot of one of the criminal organizations the most powerful in the galaxy… In short, it won’t be easy, and the heroine herself recognizes that “this job is suicide”. Obviously : Kay will have to climb the ladder little by little and meet the right people (members of the Unions) to reach her target.. In the trailer, our protagonist chats in particular with Jabba, the famous slug who leads the Hutt group.
A story that goes further than the simple robbery?
In her quest, Kay will have to surround herself well, and the help of her pet Nix, a Merqaal who has followed her “always”, will not be enough. The budding scoundrel herself recognizes it in the video. “If we (she and Nix, editor’s note) want to succeed, we need the right team and the right spaceship,” she explains… Several characters then appear – including the droid ND-5 (already featured on the dust jacketOutlaws). A character who will undoubtedly be a valuable asset against Sliro and one of the “best hunters on the Outer Rim”, hired by the boss of Zerek Besh and whose name remains unknown. Moreover, according to this last character, Kay has more than one trick up her sleeve: “She’s more involved than you say, Sliro. Vesse is involved in something bigger”. A reference to his ambitious heist or something much bigger? We will find out on August 30.
