Stardew Valley: 20 million copies sold, Eric Barone can’t believe it

Stardew Valley is a cult indie gamedeveloped for years by Eric Barone of ConcernedApe. The title has been a long-time hit, boasting over 10 million copies sold across multiple platforms in 2020, then 15 million last September. But the developer just updated its official website with a new number.

As of March 31, 2022, Stardew Valley has sold over 20 million copies, including 13 million on PC alone! Contacted by gaming pc Eric Barone split a press release explaining that his game has been more popular than ever in recent years:

The milestone of 20 million copies is truly incredible. I can’t believe the game has reached this level.

Stardew Valley’s average daily sales are higher today than at any time. I don’t know exactly why. I hope the game will continue to spread by word of mouth, and the more people play it, the more people will share the game with their friends. Anyway, I’m very happy that Stardew Valley is still so popular.

It’s a safe bet that the containment has helped the success, the players were probably looking for a relaxing game to relax, and nothing better than a little adventure in the countryside for that. But Eric Barone admits that the previous sales account was not accuratehence this not-so-sudden increase:

Part of the apparent increase in sales was actually due to me doing a more accurate count this time around. The old figure of 15 million was an undercount, because I didn’t have complete information and even if I was wrong, I preferred the figure to be too low. With the full shift to self-publishing this year, I was able to do a more in-depth sales tally.

As a reminder, the independent developer has been working on a new game for a while, Haunted Chocolatierbut he is not going to leave Stardew Valley aside, even if his priority remains his future title :

In the end, I have to follow my heart, otherwise the quality of the content will suffer. At the moment, I especially want to work on Haunted Chocolatier, so that will be my priority. If I need a break from Haunted Chocolatier, or have ideas for Stardew Valley that are close to my heart, then I might switch gears for a while.

I don’t really have any strict plans, though. If I’m productive every day and going my own way, then I feel good…and I think that will translate into a better end result for everyone.

Stardew Valley will therefore still be talked about in the futurefingers crossed that it continues to sell very well and that Haunted Chocolatier has the same success. You can find Stardew Valley to €29.99 on Amazon.
