Stardust: Why David Bowie fans are boycotting the new biopic

A film about David Bowie's life? Fans of the late artist are hardly pleased with the biopic "Stardust". They call for a boycott.

It could have been another epic biopic, but fans of David Bowie (1947-2016) seem to agree: "Stardust" doesn't do the late artist justice in any way. The first trailer appeared on Wednesday (October 28) with actor Johnny Flynn (37) in the lead role on Twitter with the words "mediocre" and "boring". Many of them even go a step further – and call for a boycott of the film.

The reason: The filming of Bowie's life was not authorized by his family. Bowie's son Duncan Jones (49) announced last year on Twitterthat the biopic "won't include my father's music". Indeed, the trailer for "Stardust" lacks songs like the title track "Ziggy Stardust", "Life on Mars?" or "Starman" completely.

The story behind "Stardust"

"Stardust" tells the story of the young Briton David Bowie, who traveled to America in the early 1970s to make a big name for himself as a musician. But only his sensational alter ego Ziggy Stardust finally brings him the desired attention. The story may sound compelling. A Twitter user, who seems to be joining the boycott of the film, says already now: "A film about one of the greatest rock stars of all time, who does not have a license for his music, is doomed to fail."
