The teams of DigitalFoundry calculated the native resolution of gameplay footage from Starfield on Xbox Series X.

Their analysis indicates that certain scenes would display, on Xbox Series X, a native resolution of… 1296p “only” (instead of the 2160p of native 4K). Heresy?

Starfield : episode 4522

It was one of the highlights of Microsoft’s recent Xbox Showcase, the full presentation of the highly anticipated Starfield. Expected for September 6 on PC and Xbox, the game signed Bethesda is the first new license for 25 years and promises players many hours of play, with more than 1,000 planets to visit, not to mention the construction aspect, personalization, exploration.

During the Starfield Direct presentation, the director of the game, Todd Howard, had made a point of confirming that the game would be blocked at 30 frames per second, on Xbox Series X as on Xbox Series S. The latter had then mentioned the fact of wanting to keep some fidelity in terms of graphics in order to obtain a 4K display on Xbox Series X and 1440p on the little sister (which arrives in Carbon Black version).

30 FPS, but no real 4K yet?

For the developers, it is therefore a technical and assumed choice, all in all respectable, which aims to ensure maximum visual fidelity, namely a true 4K resolution on Xbox Series X. However, the experts of DigitalFoundry wished to raise a slight problem concerning Starfield.

Indeed, based on a sequence running on Xbox Series X, a native resolution of 1296p “only” was observed, or approximately 60% of true 4K, the latter being subsequently upscaled to 4K.

For DigitalFoundry, Starfield uses many very complex graphic and technical processes, which directly influence the resolution and the frequency of the game, voluntarily blocked at 30 FPS.

They choose to push the boundaries of complexity and visual fidelity, and it comes at a cost. “, indicates for his part Wccftech. DigitalFoundry explains for his part that reaching a native 4K resolution and a rendering of 30 FPS is not possible for consoles (on this type of game).

Of course, we will have to wait for the release of Starfield on September 6 to find out all about the latest from Bethesda.
