Starfield: Todd Howard discusses the dialogue system, character traits and hard science fiction

It’s been quite a while since we’ve heard from Starfield, which has been postponed until next year. Initially, the game was supposed to reach us in just under a month, but Bethesda decided to take much more time to refine this new license, on which the studio is betting big. Just to make us wait until new images are published, Todd Howard spoke in an unpublished video where he answers a few questions about this experience like no other.

Starfield, a real hard science fiction game?

Howard first returned to the specific genre of Starfieldor at least the genre he thinks he belongs to, namely hard science fiction :

I can’t really be sure, because I’m like, “What are people going to think if I say yes or no? “. I think that’s the case for us, it’s hard science fiction where we understand how man began to explore space. We can even look at our ships and say: “Yes, they have a visual identity that reminds us of space exploration”. But that’s a trick question, because it’s a video game, right? In a real hard science fiction video game, you freeze to death in space. »

After explaining that he had read several researches on how space works, he justifies his choices by stating that he also didn’t want to punish the player too much with certain rules.

He also returns to the traits that we can attribute to our characters, which will always be balanced. But if you want to change it along the way, it will be possible.

Finally, Howard explains that the game will introduce a fairly standard dialogue system, but the amount of lines of dialogue will be greater in this particular game. It is near 250,000 lines of dialogue awaiting uscompared to only 60,000 in Skyrim.

Starfield will be available on PC and Xbox Series sometime in 2023.
