State of Decay 3 goes under Unreal Engine 5 and receives help from The Coalition (Gears of War)

State of Decay 3, the third in this series of open-world zombie survival games, was announced in 2020 during an Xbox showcase. But since then, no information or release date. And for good reason, the development of the game is bogged down in the same shortcomings that we have heard in other studios in recent years. But we now know more about the state of development and what’s next.

Undead Labs needs help

In a forum given to Kotaku, we learned that the team ofUndeads Labs suffered a lot of managerial problems, as well as problems of discrimination and sexism within the company. These internal concerns would have frozen the development of the game in its pre-production phase, and they would have initially arisen following the takeover of Undead Labs by Microsoft, which was completely unaware of it. Since the release of this case, we do not really know what is happening with the development.

Xbox Game Studios Director Matt Bootygave some information about the progress of the project of State of Decay 3 at a podcast :

You mentioned Undead Labs, they’re working with The Coalition in Vancouver, our Gears of War studio, using some of the technology from Unreal Engine 5 and some of the things that were in Gears of War before we brought it into State of Decay 3 »

We now know that the game is receiving help from The Coalitionthe studio also acquired by Microsoft behind Gears of War. The other information to remember, is that State of Decay 3 is now being developed on the Unreal Engine 5. We can therefore only hope that the help of The Coalition will enable State of Decay 3 to see the light of day in the best conditions.
