Bad news for fans of “Grey’s Anatomy”: the spin-off of the medical series, “Station 19” will bow out at the end of season 7, which should begin broadcasting next March in the United States.
Is this the beginning of the end for the Grey’s Anatomy universe? The American channel ABC has just announced that Station 19, the spin-off of the medical series, will bow out at the end of its season 7, which will be broadcast from Thursday March 14 in the United States.
This early decision will allow the production to work on an ending worthy of the name for the firefighters of Station 19. Before saying goodbye, the series created by Shonda Rhimes will reach the milestone of 100 episodes, despite a season reduced to 10 episodes following the writers’ and actors’ strike which paralyzed Hollywood for many months.
“For seven seasons, Station 19 was one of ABC’s flagship series thanks to Shonda and Betsy’s incredible vision, beloved characters and compelling storylines.”, said Craig Erwich, president of Disney Television, in a statement. “We have a lot to look forward to in the final season, including the celebration of the show’s 100th episode.”
Launched in 2018, Station 19 is the second spin-off of Grey’s Anatomy after Private Practice which ended in 2013. The series follows the daily life of the firefighters of Seattle Station 19, and in particular Ben Warren (Jason George) , the husband of Miranda Bailey (Chandra Wilson).
Note that season 7 of Station 19 will also be marked by change since Zoanne Clack and Peter Paige have taken over from Krista Vernoff as showrunner of the series.
Cast members react to news of Station 19 cancellation
Shonda Rhimes, as well as the actors of the series, reacted on Instagram following the announcement of the end of the series.
“Grateful for this unforgettable experience”, wrote the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, and producer of Station 19 on her account. “A heartfelt tribute to the exceptional actors who brought the characters to life and to the audiences who continued to make it all possible! Thank you for the magic, the memories and the unforgettable moments.”
Jana Lee Ortiz, who has played Andy Herrera since the series launched, reposted Shonda Rhimes in her Instagram story with the caption: “Still digesting all this… Love is very deep. Thanks Shonda.”
For the moment, production has not yet communicated on the fate of the characters linked to the universe of Grey’s Anatomy. Will Ben Warren, who is Bailey’s husband and was originally one of the doctors at Gray Sloan, return to the hospital permanently or will he only make a few appearances?
The same goes for Carina DeLuca-Bishop (Stefania Spampinato), originally present in Grey’s Anatomy, who has become one of the main characters of Station 19 since season 4.
