Steam: Cult horror game has disappeared again after 3 months without a trace

In February 2022, Alice: Madness Returns returned to Steam’s offering, to the delight of fans. After a few months, however, the nightmarish interpretation of the children’s book from 1865 disappeared from the shop.

Update from June 20, 2022:

Alice: Madness Returns is disappearing from Steam again

It was a brief comeback for Alice: Madness Returns. After five years, the game returned to Steam’s offering, only to be down for sale again just a few months later. The shop page says: “At the request of the publisher, Alice: Madness Returns is no longer for sale on Steam.” (Source: Steam). That explains the sudden disappearance of the game only in part.

According to American McGee, the creator of the Alice games, the renewed ban from sale could come with another game from the studio (Spicy Horse Games) behind Alice: Madness Returns. The studio appears to be having an issue with the game Akaneiro: Demon Hunters that appears to be serious enough that all Spicy Horse Games games have been withdrawn from sale.

And this circumstance doesn’t really answer the question about the reason for the disappearance of Alice: Madness Returns either. Namely, the publisher is Electronic Arts and not Spicy Horse Games. So poor Alice’s fate remains a mystery.

Fortunately, there are other good horror games on Steam:

Original report from March 2, 2022:

Steam comeback for action-adventure Alice: Madness Returns

The now eleven year old Alice: Madness Returns was banned from the Steam offering in 2016. The reason for this was a verification problem on the part of the publisher EA, which apparently took five years to fix. The game can also be found on EA’s own platform, Origin. For a long time, however, there was hardly any way for Steam users to get the game. Incidentally, this led to the fact that Steam keys for sometimes $100 were bought, as a fan writes in a Steam review. (Source: Steam). However, there is nothing to read about remorse, rather the opposite.

Alice: Madness Returns – Launch Trailer

The game now costs 19.99 euros on Steam again. (Source: Steam). Alice: Madness Returns is currently also part of the game library of EA’s subscription service EA Play. The mix off Action-Adventure, Hack’n’Slash and 3D-Platformer gets largely positive reviews on Steam and many want a sequel. Developer American McGee is currently looking for support for one third part named Alice: Asylum. (Source: American McGee’s Blog).

More of Alice is in the works

At least one other medium will soon offer more to the universe of the games. is current a series on the first game American McGee’s Alice in production. The whole thing is being produced by Radar Pictures, which has produced the new Jumanji films and The Last Samurai, among other things. American McGee’s Alice bears little resemblance to Disney’s family-friendly take on Alice in Wonderland. It’s more of a horror fairy tale depicting the nightmarish psyche of a severely traumatized Alice.
