Steam Deck: EA games should soon be able to work again

Things are starting to settle down for Steam Deck players. Many EA games have so far been “blocked” on the Valve console. For four weeks, the company had indeed removed from its list of verified games several studio titles that no longer launched properly. This included titles like Battlefield, Mass Effect or Fifa.

Headlines impacted

According to the two companies, patches would arrive soon to fix the problem. There is already a possible alternative, but which requires being comfortable with the Linux interface and which can potentially cause you to lose your backups. We therefore do not recommend it.

At the moment, here are the games that are no longer on this list according to information from the SteamDB site:

  • A Way Out
  • Battlefield V
  • Battlefield 4
  • Battlefield 1
  • dead space 3
  • FIFA 22
  • FIFA 21
  • It Takes Two
  • Madden NFL 23
  • Madden NFL 22
  • Mass Effect: Legendary Edition
  • Mass Effect: Andromeda
  • Mirror’s Edge Catalyst
  • Need for Speed Heat
  • Need for Speed Hot Pursuit Remastered
  • Need for Speed Most Wanted
  • Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2
  • Star Wars Battlefront 2
  • Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
  • The Sims 4
  • Titanfall 2*

Other games using the EA app launcher may well be impacted as well. According to Valve, the problem would come from the EA application which would block the launch of certain games by keeping them indefinitely on the Steam loading logo.

A temporary solution

To get started, the titles use Valve’s Proton compatibility layer, and since fixes have already been made to its “experimental” version, enabling that instead of the first in the Compatibility pane of the settings would be enough to fix the temporary problem. But updates to a game could quickly send it back to an unplayable state.

According The Vergethe developers of Proton are on the spot to solve the problem in the same way as EA which, although not officially supporting the machine of Valve, declared to the media to work “working closely with our partners at Valve to resolve these issues as quickly as possible”.
