Steam Deck OLED: Valve takes on Nintendo and unveils a new model of its portable console, with an impossible-to-get limited edition

With the arrival on the market in 2017 of the Switch, a hybrid console playable in both Portable and TV modes thanks to a dock, Nintendo probably did not expect to inspire Valve, which announced then launched at the end of the year 2021 its Steam Deck, allowing you to play certified PC games and even simply use it for office tasks. The success was such that a new market was created, with the ROG All y from ASUS, since available in ROG Ally Z1 and ROG Ally Z1 Extreme, and the Legion Go from Lenovo. Obviously, the question arose as to whether Valve was going to offer a new model and we now have the answer, see our dedicated article, because Gabe Newell’s company has just unveiled a new OLED model for its Steam Deck. Yes, the comparison with the Japanese firm is more than obvious at this level.

This Steam Deck OLED and, in addition to the technology of its screen, will have several other advantages. Already, its screen will offer HDR for even more contrast and will consume less energy. Autonomy has been increased by 30 to 50% thanks to a 50 W battery compared to 40 W currently. A new COULD (hardware acceleration)AMD engraved in 6 nm and more efficient is used, against 7 nm previously, as well as the Wi-Fi 6E standard to enable faster downloads. Finally, the fan of this model is larger and has improved thermal components resulting in less heating, while weighing 30g less.

And the best part is that its different versions will not cost more than currently, with a choice of 512 or 1 TB of memory. Yes, it’s double the storage space for the same price, what more could you ask for? Its release date is set for next week, Thursday November 16, 2023 at 7:00 p.m. Only one copy per account and per week can be ordered to allow as many players as possible to obtain their precious one. A waiting list will be created in the event of a shortage, but Valve reassures by stating that it does not anticipate a long wait as with the launch of the Steam Deck LCD. And if you ever wonder, all current accessories will be compatiblewhile spare parts and repair guides will be offered by iFixit if necessary.

Residents in the United States and Canada will also be able to afford a 1TB limited edition featuring, among other things, a translucent back and various orange-colored elements. This is a product classified as experimental and produced in small quantities. If the experience is successful and demand is high, other colors may be offered.

Furthermore, the Steam Deck LCD 256 GB will continue to be offered for purchase, but at a reduced price, while the other current variations will remain available until stocks last, again with a discount. Here are their new prices in effect now:

  • Steam Deck 64 GB SSD NVMe LCD – €369.00;
  • Steam Deck 256 GB SSD NVMe LCD – €419.00;
  • Steam Deck 512 GB SSD NVMe LCD – €469.00.

As a reminder, the price fell this summer with devices reconditioned directly by Valve, to see what these prices will become. Below you will find the three offers which will therefore be the standard on the Steam Deck side when the OLED model is launched:
