Steam Deck: spare parts cost an arm, good luck fixing it yourself

Last Friday, iFixit accidentally posted the Steam Deck spare parts on its site. The good news is that the sale of these parts is coming soon, and those who wish to repair their console themselves will soon have the possibility. The bad news is that they are marketed at an exorbitant price.

While your Steam Deck is unlikely to be in bad shape already — in fact, it’s unlikely you even managed to get hold of one at all — Valve already took the lead in announcing in February last that it will be possible to repair your console yourself thanks to the various spare parts that will soon be on sale. Since then, the manufacturer has not given any news on the subject, but a small blunder from iFixit allows us to know a little more.

Indeed, it would seem that the company specializing in the dismantling of electronic devices has signed a partnership with Valve to market these spare parts. This Friday, May 20, a small accident led to the publication of the pieces on the British version of his site. The mistake was quickly discovered and the pages were immediately removed, but not fast enough for their price to go unnoticed. As much to say it immediately, it will be necessary to save to be able to buy them.

Spare parts for the Steam Deck are very expensive

Thus, iFixit sells the motherboard for £289.99, or €343, while the screen of the 512 GB model costs £89.99, or around €106. In total, 23 components can be purchased on the iFixit site, of which here is the complete list:

  • Battery adhesive strips
  • Motherboard
  • Charger
  • Circuit boards
  • Back or front cover
  • Screen
  • Screen with anti-reflective treatment
  • Triggers
  • Speakers
  • Right and left joysticks
  • Membrane of buttons or D-Pad
  • Fan

A few essential parts are therefore still missing, in particular the battery, but iFixit has indicated that a solution will soon be offered to players reckless enough to embark on a home repair. As for users who have already placed an order, the firm ensures that the orders will be honored, although they were made before the official launch.
