The Steam Deck will usher in a new way to play its Steam games. To make the experience as smooth as possible, Valve has worked on a dynamic save system. Your progress will be saved in real time so that you can resume your game on PC without turning off your console.
Currently, Steam on PC already offers a cloud backup system. When you quit a game, your progress is stored and you can pick up where you left off on another PC. However, the upcoming release of the Steam Deck forced Valve to review this system.
The Steam Deck is a portable console that relies on mobility. In practice, this means that a player does not necessarily turn off his machine when he is no longer playing, but simply puts it on standby. The game is therefore not left and the backups theoretically not placed on the cloud. Valve therefore introduces dynamic backup.
The Steam Deck will have a dynamic save system
As soon as the console is put to sleep, the save will automatically be transferred to the cloud. The user therefore has no no need to quit his game to resume it on his PC. A very practical feature, especially since Valve relies on the flexibility and convergence of the two platforms. However, all is not perfect. It is indeed necessary that the developers include by themselves this functionality. A simple manipulation, according to Valve, but that must be done. Not necessarily obviously on old games.

If you decide to play a title without this system, you will therefore have to leave your game on Steam Deck for the cloud backup to take place. An additional manipulation, therefore.
As a reminder, the Steam Deck is a portable console that uses the same format as the Nintendo Switch. The machine will allow you to play a large number of titles available on Steam. Pre-orders started in the summer of 2021 and the first models will be delivered next month. The console is available in several versions and the basic model costs 419 euros. The Steam Deck could definitively launch Valve into the console market, a few years after the failure of the Steam Machines.
