Users of Meta Quest 2, 3 and Pro headsets, here is some good news! Through its Steam Link application, Valve is making it even easier to stream virtual reality games wirelessly from Steam.
Until now, two perfectly functional solutions existed for wirelessly streaming VR games from a Steam library to a Meta Quest headset: the company’s free official solution, Air Link, and the paid Virtual Desktop application. Here is a third that could satisfy those for whom the other methods did not necessarily work correctly: Steam Link.
A new solution to enjoy your VR games
Free, the application which originally allows you to broadcast games on local screens must be installed on your Meta Quest 2, 3 or Pro headset. It is available on the official store. Unsurprisingly, you will also need to have Steam and SteamVR installed on your PC, which must run at least Windows 10. But linking the two applications via the same local network will not be enough to be able to enjoy your games in good conditions.
5GHz Wi-Fi or nothing
In fact, Valve indicates that a 5 GHz Wi-Fi connection must be used by the headset, and that the PC must be wired to the router for the whole thing to work correctly. Since the PC does the calculations, it must also have a little pep. At a minimum, an NVIDIA 970 graphics card is required, while an RTX 2070 and at least 16 GB of RAM are definitely recommended. Wi-Fi 6 or 6E also won’t hurt according to Valve.
It now remains to be seen whether Steam Link proves more or less efficient than other solutions, notably Air Link, which has come a long way since its beta days.
