Emotional moment in the “double pass”: When it comes to Beckenbauer, Stefan Effenberg is overwhelmed by his feelings and leaves the studio.

It was valid on the pitch Stefan Effenberg (55) always as a tough dog. The former national soccer player proves that he also has a highly emotional side in the latest edition of the sport1 cult program “Doppelpass”. When moderator Florian König (56) asked him about Franz Beckenbauer (1945-2023) after the usual football talk about the restarted Bundesliga, Effenberg initially visibly struggled to compose himself.

In a shaky voice, he uttered another sentence: “He was a great person” – then the emotions overwhelmed him. Shaking his head and with tears in his eyes, he got up from his seat and left the panel. König tried to get him to stay, but Effenberg marched out of the open studio in the Hilton Hotel at Munich Airport – to applause from the audience in attendance.

In addition to the spectators on site, the experts present and König also showed complete understanding for Effenberg’s departure: “I understand that. The emotionality is so great for so many who knew him. I said recently and I mean it: Everyone who loved football had a lump in their throat,” said the moderator.

Big funeral service in the Allianz Arena

The emperor died exactly a week ago on Sunday at the age of 78. Last Friday (January 12th) Beckenbauer was buried in his parents’ grave at the Perlacher Forst cemetery. He was buried at a private funeral service in a small circle.

On January 19th there will be a large memorial ceremony in Munich’s Allianz Arena in honor of the football legend. The free admission tickets required for participation are on the club’s homepage available.

“Friends and companions from national and international sports, culture and politics,” including Chancellor Olaf Scholz (65), are expected at the memorial service. The first shows the ceremony on TV from around 3:00 p.m., BR television reports live from 2:40 p.m. The event will also be shown in the ARD media library.
