Stefan Raab wants to save the ESC, but has one condition attached to it: Dieter Bohlen is not allowed to take part under any circumstances. The pop titan reacts calmly.

Stefan Raab, 57, and the ESC are known to have a very successful past together. But without the former presenter of “TV Total” and discoverer of ESC winner Lena Meyer-Landrut, 32, the Germans’ track record at the Eurovision Song Contest is more than poor. According to media reports, including the industry magazine DWDL, Raab wants to put an end to the suffering of ESC fans next year – but there are strict conditions attached to it that affect another TV veteran: Dieter Bohlen, 70.

Stefan Raab is forging a “rescue package” for German participation in the ESC

There was a media earthquake across the country when Stefan Raab recently announced his comeback. In autumn 2024 he will get into the ring for a third time against former boxing world champion Regina Halmich, 47. Voices immediately became loud that that couldn’t be everything. There is even more lurking in secret. And lo and behold: Stefan Raab wants to achieve nothing less than to revolutionize the ESC preliminary decision and thus finally get the German representatives at the ESC out of the points cellar from which the past acts have not yet found their way out.

No chance for pop titan Dieter Bohlen?

What is already certain: Stefan Raab has set a seemingly irrefutable condition that is aimed at an RTL face. Although Raab has deviated from his former home station “ProSieben” and now produces programs for RTL (e.g. Schlag den Star, etc.), he prohibits any involvement of Poptitan and DSDS jury member Dieter Bohlen. How the whole story will turn out and whether Raab and his team can ensure more enthusiasm, support and loyalty for the upcoming German ESC acts remains to be seen – but there definitely won’t be a typical DSDS pop song.

Dieter Bohlen reacts more than calmly

One person who doesn’t seem to care about this announcement is Dieter Bohlen himself. The 70-year-old told “Bild” that he was very calm. In his opinion, mentioning his name was just about “promotion because they’ve gotten so much attention lately.” Over the last few years, he himself has repeatedly received inquiries about participation and has always rejected them. “I wouldn’t take part in it again for any money in the world. No matter in what capacity. (…) I just don’t like the music and the event that much,” explains the pop titan of his negative attitude towards the ESC. After his attempts in the past, including with Nino de Angelo, 60, in 1989 and a 14th place out of 20 participating acts, he has now finished the song contest.

Nothing has been decided yet anyway

According to DWDL, Stefan Raab forged his plan together with Daniel Rosemann, 43, and founded “Raab Entertainment”, of which Rosemann is now the managing director. The two media makers had come up with a “rescue package” that would allow all the key broadcasters (groups), i.e. ARD, ZDF, RTL Deutschland and “ProSieben Sat.1”, to participate. The concept was presented to various decision-makers at the individual broadcasters. Nothing has been decided yet. They first want to wait and see how Isaak performs at the ESC final in May.
