(Boursier.com) — Stellantis and Vulcan Energy Resources have signed a binding letter of intent for the first stage of a project to develop the use of geothermal energy to decarbonize the energy mix of the Stellantis industrial site in Rüsselsheim, Germany, where the DS 4 is manufactured and the Opel Astra. According to current estimates, this project could provide a significant portion of the site’s annual energy needs as early as 2025.

The first phase, which concerns the northernmost part of the sector studied by Vulcan in the Upper Rhine Valley, will include a preliminary feasibility study carried out by Vulcan and focused on the construction of geothermal installations for the Stellantis plant. If the results are conclusive, the next phase will focus on drilling, with further study and development. Stellantis plans to finance 50% of the design of the project, which is also supported by local authorities.
