Stellantis and Samsung SDI to Invest $2.5 Billion in US Battery Factory

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Stellantis and Samsung SDI said on Tuesday they would invest more than $2.5 billion (2.33 billion euros) to build a new battery factory in Kokomo, in the U.S. state of Indiana, as the automaker seeks to bolster its production of electric vehicles.

The objective is to have a functional plant in 2025 with an initial annual production capacity of 23 gigawatt-hours which can go up to 33 gigawatt-hours in the following years.

Stellantis already has factories in Kokomo where it plans to invest $229 million to produce electric eight-speed gearboxes, according to an announcement last October when it partnered with Samsung SDI to form their technology-focused joint venture. battery production.
