Member of the IONNA initiative, Stellantis (Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Chrysler, etc.) announces the upcoming compatibility of its vehicles with the Tesla charging standard.

Automotive giant Stellantis is the latest major player in the electric industry to adopt Tesla’s charging standard. The first vehicle models will be compatible with the famous SAE J3400 connector from 2025 in North America.

An IONNA network in CSS and J3400

The group behind the Peugeot, Citroën, Fiat, Chrysler and Opel brands has announced that adapters will be made available for vehicles equipped with the combined charging system (CCS) port during the transition period. These will allow the use of private and public J3400 infrastructures while awaiting the deployment of an integrated native solution.

“Consumers benefit when the industry aligns with open standards. We are pleased to announce our support and adoption of the SAE J3400 connector, an important step for all customers on the path to open and transparent charging”reacted Ricardo Stamatti, senior vice president of energy and global charging at Stellantis.

Stellantis is part of an alliance of seven major manufacturers who have come together to create the IONNA charging network. By 2030, this must include at least 30,000 high-power charging stations in urban and highway areas across North America. Stellantis vehicles can be recharged there with both J3400 and CCS.

Powered by renewable energy

“The network will use renewable energy to provide reliability, high-power charging capacity, digital integration, attractive locations and various conveniences during charging”explains Stellantis in its press release.

With such an initiative, automobile manufacturers intend to convince drivers to switch to electric by offering a more seamless experience. In North America, distances are greater than in Europe, slowing the mass adoption of electric cars. The establishment of an intelligently meshed and almost universal network of charging stations could be a game-changer in these territories.
