In her new book, Stephanie zu Guttenberg talks about difficult phases in her life. In it she also reveals that she and her husband, former politician Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, had wanted a third child.
Karl-Theodor, 50, and Stephanie zu Guttenberg, 45, have had some difficult years. In 2011, allegations of plagiarism were made against the then defense minister for the first time. In his dissertation, on the basis of which he was awarded the academic doctorate, Zu Guttenberg adopted several passages without citing sources. After fierce criticism and investigations, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg announced his resignation from all political offices in March of the same year and announced a little later that he would move to the USA with his family for the time being.
This also left its mark on his wife Stephanie, as she explains in her new book “We can do it better!” revealed, which will be released on October 6, 2022.
Stephanie zu Guttenberg: “My husband and I were really hoping for a third child”
Karl-Theodor and Stephanie tied the knot in 2000 and are parents of two daughters: Anna, 21, and Mathilde, 20. The couple actually wanted to expand their family, but the wish remained unfulfilled. “I never talked about it, but my husband and I were really hoping for a third child,” says an excerpt from the book that “Bild” has available. “We tried that for a long time. I took hormones for it and made a pilgrimage from one doctor to the next,” she continues.
It was a serious setback for her: “Every woman who has experienced something similar knows: It’s not an easy time. I was often very sad. Especially when it turned out that all the effort wasn’t worth it and the hope was worth it had not fulfilled.”
“It was like the world was collapsing on me”
The plagiarism scandal involving her husband also posed a major challenge for Stephanie zu Guttenberg. “It was as if the world was collapsing on me. Frankly, I was completely overwhelmed by this situation. A political debate turned into hatred. This hatred was so great at the time that a member of the Bundestag seriously said this sentence to my husband threw: ‘In the past they would have shot you for it,'” she reports. Their children are also said to have felt the hate: “Even my daughters were taken into custody. They didn’t want children from parents like us at school.”
Therefore, the move to the USA was a blessing, nobody there knew the family – finally they could “breathe” again. The couple has been living in Germany again since 2020. While Stephanie is committed to internet education for children and young people, Karl-Theodor is now a moderator at RTL.
