In their blurb, auction house Julien’s claims that Steve Jobs wore these Birkenstock-branded sandals during historic moments such as the creation of the Apple I in Steve Wozniak’s garage. They are certainly worn, with the trace of the soles of the feet of Steve Jobs clearly visible, but they are still in working order. The auctioneer estimated their value at €60,000 or €80,000. It is for a sum approximately three times higher than a buyer visibly fan of the American visionary acquired the sandals worn in the 70s and 80s by the creator of Apple.

Don’t be fooled by their stoned appearance: these objects are real historical relics. As such, they have already toured the world and are frequently exhibited in various museums and at conferences. Margot Fraser, one of the first importers on American soil of the iconic German sandal brand, remembers very well having been contacted by Me Jobs in the 1970s.

During their interview, she noted that Me Jobs was genuinely obsessed with clean design and functionality of these shoes. Personality traits that were to become the trademark of the leader and of Apple. He particularly wanted to know where the idea for the shape of the Birkenstocks came from, as well as the materials used.

His ex-wife and mother of his first child still speaks fondly of these sandals and all they represent: “These sandals [le] showed in all its simplicity. They were his uniform […] He was convinced of the intelligence and practicality of their design and their comfort. In Birkenstock, he didn’t feel like a businessman, so he had complete freedom to think creatively.”

Steve Jobs’ sandals were just one of the 1,504 items on offer during an auction titled “Icons and Idols: Rock’n’roll”. Collectors and fans had the opportunity to acquire, among other vintage objects, sketches by Kanye West, jewelry by 2Pac or Elvis Presley. None of these items have reached the value of the iconic ruler’s Birkenstocks.
