Mourning for Steve Lawrence: The musician died at the age of 88. He formed a musical duo with his wife Eydie Gormé.
Singer Steve Lawrence (1935-2024) is dead. He died According to “People” on Thursday (March 7th) at the age of 88 as a result of Alzheimer’s disease. He leaves behind, among others, his son David, his daughter-in-law, a granddaughter and his brother. “My father was an inspiration to so many people,” explains David in a statement. But for him he was simply “a charming, good-looking, funny guy” who sang a lot. “Sometimes alone and sometimes with his incredibly talented wife.”
Award-winning duo
The entertainer, singer, actor and musical performer, born Sidney Liebowitz in New York, was married to his wife Eydie Gormé (1928-2013) from 1957 until her death in 2013. The two met as musicians on Steve Allen’s late night show (1921-2000) and later became a couple. From the 1960s onwards, Lawrence no longer only recorded music solo, but also with his wife. They won a Grammy together for “We Got Us.” As a solo artist, he enjoyed success with “Go Away Little Girl”, which reached number one on the US charts in 1963.
The couple was also known as Steve and Eydie on the show stages in Las Vegas and often appeared on TV. Her television specials about American songwriters have even won awards. In 1978, “Steve and Eydie Celebrate Irving Berlin” won seven Emmys. According to People, Lawrence said of his wife’s death in 2013: “Eydie has been my partner on stage and in life for more than 55 years. I fell in love with her the moment I saw her and even more when I saw her “I heard her sing for the first time. While my personal loss is unimaginable, the world has lost one of the greatest pop singers of all time.”
