Long-time colleagues, friends and companions mourn the late comedian and actor Carl Reiner – including Steve Martin.
Carl Reiner (1922-2020) is dead. The American comedy legend died on Tuesday night like his son Rob Reiner (73) announced via Twitter. After the news became known, numerous colleagues and prominent friends said goodbye to the comedian, actor and director.
A great role model
The US comedy icon Steve Martin (74) sent via Twitter one last goodbye "to my greatest mentor in films and in life. Thank you, dear Carl." Martin starred in some comedies alongside Reiner, including "Dead people don't wear checks" (1982), which Reiner also directed.
In the "Ocean's" trilogy, Reiner was seen as trickster Saul Bloom alongside George Clooney (59), who also commented. "He made every room that Carl Reiner entered funnier, smarter and kind. It all seemed so effortless," Clooney said in a statement to "TheWrap".
For comedian Sarah Silverman (49), Reiner "embodied the word human", as she wrote on Twitter. He not only made her favorite films, among other things, but also his "humanity" was "incomparable".
His spirit will live on
"Star Trek" legend William Shatner (89) also spoke via Twitter his condolences. "Carl was a master of his trade," said Shatner. He didn't know him very well personally, but it was still a pleasure for him to have known Reiner at all.
"Your heart, your humor, your mind will live on in all of us," said Shatner's "Star Trek" colleague George Takei (83) also on Twitter. The stars shone "a little bit happier" today because Reiner is now there to entertain the sky.
Many other colleagues also spoke up to say goodbye – including "Two and a Half Men" star Jon Cryer (55), the actress Rosanna Arquette (60), cult author Stephen King (72) and actor Josh Gad (39). "Thank you for always making us laugh and for bringing us joy," Gad explained, who titled Reiner as one of the greatest comedians of all time.
