Steve Martin: End of career after winning streak?

Steve Martin apparently plans to end his long career after his hit series Only Murders in the Building.

Steve Martin (76) is one of the most legendary living comedians from the Hollywood orbit – not least thanks to films such as “Three Amigos!”. Even if things got quieter in between, he recently celebrated great success with the series “Only Murders in the Building”, in which he can be seen alongside Martin Short (72) and Selena Gomez (30). After the end of the show, Martin will probably say goodbye to the dream factory, as he now suggests in an interview with the industry magazine “The Hollywood Reporter”..

He has been on stage with Short many times in recent years. “We were very happy just doing the live show,” explains Martin. Then came the great success of the series, which premiered in mid-2021 and can be seen in Germany on the Disney+ streaming service. According to him, there could be a “natural end” to all of this, for example if someone got sick or just burned out. “I wouldn’t do it without Marty,” says Martin, who is also one of the brains behind the series.

Steve Martin is not looking for new projects

“When this TV show is over, I won’t be looking for others. I won’t be looking for other films. I don’t want to do cameos. Oddly enough, that’s it,” Martin continues. So it could be his last role.

“Only Murders in the Building” has been nominated a total of 17 times at this year’s Emmy Awards, which take place on September 12th. The series occupies third place in the number of nominations together with “Hacks” behind “Succession” (25 nominations) as well as “Ted Lasso” and “The White Lotus” (20 nominations each). Martin also competes against Short in the category “Best Lead Actor in a Comedy Series”.

For fans, it is to be hoped that the series will get many more seasons. The episodes of the second season can currently be seen, but a third has already been announced. Around three weeks after the start of the new episodes the US streaming service Hulu announced in Julythat a third season is planned.
