Director Steven Spielberg (73, "Jurassic Park") mourns his father. Electrical engineer Arnold Meyer Spielberg died of natural causes on Tuesday (August 25) at the age of 103, as did Amblin Partners, his son's production company, communicated via Twitter. Hollywood icon Spielberg thanked his father for his "life" on his deathbed.

"You are our fire. You are our home. Thank you for my life. I love you, papa", quoted the industry journal "Variety" from a statement by the 73-year-old director and his sisters Anne (70), Susan (67) and Nancy Spielberg (64). Their father had shown them "to love exploring, to expand the mind, to keep their feet on the ground" and at the same time to "reach for the stars".

He took online courses well into old age

According to the statement, Steven Spielberg thinks of his father every time he sees "a PlayStation" or "a cell phone". "From the smallest pocket calculator to the iPad – I see my father and say: 'My father and a team of geniuses have started it.'" Arnold Meyer Spielberg worked for a time as an engineer at General Electric and took online courses until his death on different topics – for example thermodynamics, history and astronomy.

The tweet with which Amblin Partners announced the death of the 103-year-old said he had dedicated himself "more than a century" to his family, friends and career. The production company also expressed "deepest condolences" to his family.

Steven Spielberg's mother Leah Adler, who was married to his father from 1945 to 1966, died in 2017 at the age of 97. His stepmother Bernice Colner Spielberg has also passed away.
