Stiftung Warentest chooses cheap sunscreen as test winner

Almost every sunscreen on the market reliably protects against UV radiation. Stiftung Warentest found this out in a study (“test” issue 7/2021). A prerequisite for protection, however, is that you use enough sunscreen.

The rule here is “take big, don’t mess”: According to the experts, a 1.80 meter tall adult needs about three tablespoons of sunscreen to properly apply sunscreen to his whole body. That’s about 40 milliliters. If you also take into account that sun worshipers should apply sunscreen regularly after sweating or swimming, a 200-milliliter bottle lasts a maximum of five days.

You can read the detailed test results and the best children’s sunscreens in the sunscreen buying guide.

Travelers should therefore better have several bottles in their luggage on vacation – or buy more on site. At least internationally well-known branded products should have the same quality abroad as in Germany. However, sunscreen is often significantly more expensive in holiday destinations. Of 17 tested sunscreens with a sun protection factor of 30, 50 or 50+, 13 are either “good” or “very good”.

1st place secures the Sundance Sensitive Sun Balmfrom dm (Grade 1.4). The classic Sundance sunscreen did even better in the 2019 test with a grade of 1.3. Consumers pay around 1.73 euros per hundred milliliters here; this makes the Sundance Sensitive Sun Lotion one of the cheaper sun protection products. Among the test winners are other very cheap products from discounters and drugstores: “Very good” sun protection is available from 1.10 euros for 100 milliliters.

The more expensive competition cuts in part significantly worse from: Last in the test are the Capital Soleil sun spray with hyaluronic acid from Vichy, the sensitive sun spray from Lavera and the sun spray from Biosolis. Both products undercut the stated protection factor and overall score “inadequate”.
