Still on Windows 10 21H1? Monthly security updates are over

Windows 10 version 21H1 has reached end of support and received its latest security update.

The December 2022 Patch Tuesday was the last for Windows 10 21H1, which began shipping in May 2021. Users of this version of Windows 10 will no longer receive monthly security updates to fix vulnerabilities, warned Microsoft in a blog post.

Windows 10 21H1 was originally a minor feature update. It should be easy to install for systems running Windows 10 2004 or 20H2. It included support for multiple cameras compatible with Windows Hello, improvements to Windows Defender Application Guard, and improvements to Windows Management Instrumentation through Group Policy.

Windows 10 users: check out PC Health Check

Microsoft will automatically update devices nearing the end of support to the latest version of Windows 10 — version 22H2. This version began rolling out in October and marks the transition to Windows 10 Annual Updates. Microsoft will drop support for Windows 10 in October 2025.

Microsoft is encouraging customers to upgrade their eligible devices to Windows 11, version 2022, which began rolling out in September. Users can check for the update in Windows Update, in Settings.

“If we detect that your devices might have an issue, such as app incompatibility, we may set up a backup and not offer the update until this issue is resolved,” Microsoft notes in a blog post.

Windows 10 users can use the PC Health Check app to check if a PC is eligible to update to Windows 11. Users can also check Microsoft’s system requirements for Windows 11.

Windows 10 21H1 has had 18 months of support. Windows 10 21H2 Home and Pro users get 18 months of support for Windows 10 22H2, and Enterprise and Education 30 months.

Windows 11 22H2 Enterprise and Education edition gets 36 months of support, while Home and Pro users get 24 months.
