(updated with details)

PARIS, July 11 (Reuters) – STMicroelectronics and GlobalFoundries announced on Monday the creation of a new semiconductor factory in France.

The two groups declare that it is an investment of several billion euros which will benefit from the support of the State, without specifying the exact amount.

“Jobs will be created on the ST site in Crolles”, in Isère, says STMicro, according to which the new production unit will require around 1,000 additional jobs.

According to Le Figaro, which reported the information on Sunday evening, the amount of the investment would amount to nearly four billion euros.

This project, made public as the “Choose France” summit is being held in Versailles on Monday, is in line with the European Commission’s initiative to strengthen Europe’s sovereignty in the manufacture of chips, adds daily on its website.

The EU executive is ready to devote 50 billion euros by 2030 to increase Europe’s share of global chip manufacturing to 20%. (Written by Bertrand Boucey and Tangi Salaün)
