A smuggler has just been caught at the Chinese border with the equivalent of tens of thousands of dollars worth of SSDs under his jacket.
Smugglers are increasingly trying to cross the Chinese border with electronic components, including SSDs. While some try to hide them in larger devices like scooters, some do it the old-fashioned way and simply fit them under their coat.
Nearly 450 SSDs caught up
This is interesting news that has just been sent to us again by the Chinese customs authorities, and whose media HKEPC echoes. A man, whose look seemed “shady” to the border police, was apprehended to be searched. As you can guess, the fishing was good this time!
The suspect, who wore a baggy coat and had a substantial protrusion at the waist, was actually carrying nearly 450 M.2 SSDs strapped to plastic wrap around his belt and abdomen. Greedy, he also had memory cards in his little makeshift cache.
Already $4 million in property seized
The smuggler was carrying goods with a total value of 32,984 dollars, which is far from being the most important loot that the customs officers could intercept. Last year, a record $3 million seizure of graphics cards was made at the port of Huanggang. Over the last two years, the customs of the Middle Kingdom claim to have intercepted nearly 4 million dollars worth of computer equipment intended to pass in secret.
The purpose of passing these products without declaration at the border is to avoid the payment of import taxes, and therefore to make greater gains in China. In addition, there are shortages of components in the country due to the sanctions against it. We therefore imagine that aspiring fraudsters should not feel hindered by these police operations.
