Store asparagus: that's how it works

If you are unable to consume fresh asparagus on the same day, it is important that you store it properly. You should keep the following in mind when storing asparagus:

1. Only keep unpeeled asparagus

Asparagus can only be stored if it has not been peeled and has not yet been treated. Once it's blanched or cooked, you should either consume immediately or immediately wrap in plastic wrap and keep in the fridge. Otherwise it dries out and loses its taste. So eat peeled asparagus the next day at the latest.

By the way: You can briefly put dried asparagus in the water so that it becomes fresh again. However, the sticks also release their aroma into the water. Then also cut off the dry ends, which otherwise become woody.

2. Store white asparagus in the kitchen towel

The safest way to keep white asparagus is him wrap in a clean, damp tea towel and place it in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator. This way it lasts up to 3 days. Then you should refrain from eating the asparagus raw. Better cook a tasty asparagus soup from it.

Important: If you want to store asparagus in it, make sure that there are no odorous fruits or other foods with a strong smell in the fridge. Otherwise the asparagus takes on the strange smell and loses its own aroma.

3. Be sure to keep green asparagus upright

Green asparagus is a bit more demanding to store than its white cousin. Unlike this one, it should stored upright, preferably with the ends in cold water. So put a little water (or ice cubes) in a tall, slim vessel, put the sticks in and it is best to cover the heads with some cling film. Then place the jar in a dark place in your kitchen where the asparagus is not directly exposed to the sun. This way you can keep green asparagus for 3 to 4 days.

4. You can keep frozen asparagus

Of course you can also freeze the asparagus for storage. In contrast to all other methods, it is important here that you peel the asparagus beforehand. This is especially true for white asparagus, but you should also roughly clean green asparagus beforehand. Then Cut off woody ends and cut the asparagus into pieces.
