Storm warning – violent thunderstorms brought heavy rain and hail

A thunderstorm super cell swept over Salzburg and Upper Austria from Bavaria on Tuesday evening. In addition to heavy rain and squalls, the storm also brought hailstones the size of a cherry in some cases. These crackled from the sky at Mondsee (see video above). “That was scary,” commented a reader reporter on the hail: “The end of the world was here within seconds.”

The districts of Gmunden and Vöklabruck were particularly affected by the violent thunderstorm, warned the severe weather center. Numerous users posted videos and photos of hailstones raining down on social media.

Also for Wednesday Strong thunderstorms are to be expected, especially along the northern Alps and in the eastern mountains. Local rain showers come down in the morning. In contrast, it remains largely dry in the south and east. In the eastern flatlands there is initially brisk westerly to north-westerly winds.

In the humid air, thunderstorms can be violent, in the north there is a local risk of storms due to hail and squalls. In the south and southeast, on the other hand, it remains mostly dry and sunny.

As well on Friday In the east and south it remains initially sunny and humid, but in the course of the day it becomes increasingly thunderstorm with the risk of storms. In the Danube region, thunderstorm showers also pass through, from Vorarlberg to the Salzkammergut the clouds predominate and it rains from time to time.
