Some 5,500 homes in the South-West of France were still without electricity on Saturday evening following the violent storms which hit the area on Friday evening, we learned from Enedis.
Saturday morning, 26,000 homes were without electricity in nine departments of the South-West (Gers, Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Hautes-Pyrénées, Haute-Garonne, Lot-et-Garonne, Landes, Dordogne, Lot, Tarn-et-Garonne) , according to Enedis.
“At the end of the weekend, almost all homes should be connected again,” a spokesperson for Enedis told AFP on Saturday evening.
Enedis teams from other French regions came to reinforce local staff throughout the day on Saturday in an area where falling trees or branches damaged the electrical cables.
It is also a tree fall on a vehicle which injured a 65-year-old man in Pau on Friday evening.
The rains and strong winds gave rise to around 120 firefighter interventions on Friday evening in the Gers, the most affected department, according to the department’s prefecture. Several roads were cut there, while in other areas of the southwest, train traffic could be disrupted.
In anticipation of bad weather, outdoor events were canceled on Friday evening, such as the Pause Guitare festival in Albi, where spectators were evacuated while trumpeter Ibrahim Maalouf was to go on stage, according to an AFP correspondent. .
