Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann calls for tough action against the regime in Tehran. The FDP politician believes Israel can act “smartly”. She welcomes the acquisition of Israeli air defense for Germany.

The chairwoman of the Defense Committee in the Bundestag, Marie-Agnes Strack-Zimmermann, expects Israel to react prudently to the Iranian missile and drone attacks and does not expect a major counterattack. “The fact is that the United States and international partners and friends have asked Israel to do this so that there is no conflagration. And I hope and assume that Israel is wise in this regard,” said the FDP politician the ntv show Early Start.

There are increasing calls internationally for Israel to react with restraint to Iran’s unprecedented attack. According to a statement from Washington, US President Joe Biden urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to carefully consider a possible strike against Iran and its consequences. In the phone call between the two on Saturday evening (local time), Biden made it “very clear” to Netanyahu that they needed to “think carefully and strategically about the risks of escalation.” According to media reports, Israel’s leadership has not yet decided how to respond to the Iranian attack at the weekend.

Put more pressure on mullahs

The international warnings about tough measures against Iran are also due to fears of a conflagration in the region. According to defense politician Strack-Zimmermann, an escalation is not in the interests of the surrounding countries that have supported Israel in its defense. Ultimately, no one would benefit. “The people there want to live in peace and quiet,” said Strack-Zimmermann.

From Germany, however, we must above all look at what measures could be taken in our own country. After Iran’s attack at the weekend, Strack-Zimmermann is calling for decisive action against the regime in Tehran. “It’s time for these actions to have consequences and for the mullahs who are triggering this to distract domestic politics to get an answer.”

Germany and Europe would have to ask themselves how to deal with Iran in the future and also question the close trade relations. At the European level, the focus must now be on adding the Revolutionary Guards to the European terror list and further sanctions. “This can be put on the agenda in the European Parliament. I strongly recommend that Commission President von der Leyen take on this security policy matter.”

“This is an incredible system”

With a view to the Israeli air defense, which prevented a catastrophe in the country due to the air raids, Strack-Zimmermann was relieved that part of it should also protect Germany – the “Arrow 3” system, the purchase of which was decided in November 2023. The Bundeswehr procurement office and the Israeli Ministry of Defense signed a contract worth 3.6 billion euros. Arrow 3 was also used at the weekend.

“This is an incredible system, developed by Israel and the USA, because it can also intercept long- and medium-range missiles,” said Strack-Zimmermann. Together with the IRIS-T system, among others, it will become part of European air defense. The defense politician was unable to say exactly when the Israeli system would be used. But it will be the case “soon,” said Strack-Zimmermann. “This shows that not only we are on Israel’s side. But Israel is also on our side. To ward off terror so that all citizens in Europe can live in peace and friendship.”
