Although it was already getting dark, the French tried to follow the sure-footed chamois in the steep terrain. In the darkness he could no longer see the chamois, nor climb or descend from the rock face. He looked for a safe place where he would get through the cold night without help. At midnight he called his girlfriend who was in Salzburg on his cell phone and described his predicament in the Salzkammergut. The 29-year-old French woman alerted the police.
