It is one of the emblematic creatures of the “Stranger Things” universe: the Mind Flayer. Volume 2 Season 4 finally reveals its creator.

To love Stranger Things, you also have to love monsters. The universe of the series contains a large and beautiful gallery of them, giving the heroes a hard time. There are Demogorgons, Demodogs, and even Demobats, introduced in Season 4. But one of the major creatures remains the Mind Flayer who reigns supreme over the Upside Down.
A giant-legged, spider-like entity made of particles and black smoke, it first appears in Season 2. The terrifying monster – named after the Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game – features of great intelligence and his power is unlimited. He controls the creatures and also enters the minds of human hosts – like Will (Noah Schnapp) or Billy (Dacre Montgomery).
Its origins have always been unknown. But episode 9 of season 4 finally lifts the veil on this mystery. While the Mind Flayer has always been presented as a supreme entity, it is ultimately only the work of one person: Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). When the latter faces Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), he explains to her his arrival in the Upside Down after having been sent there by the heroine. “I have become an explorer. An explorer of a realm unexplored by man”, he reveals.

A flashback scene shows a badly burned Henry Creel – or One – walking through the parallel universe which bears no resemblance to the Upside Down as we know it today. “One day I found the most extraordinary thing of all. I saw it as a way to realize my potential, to transcend my human form. To become the predator I was always meant to be.”

As he raises his hand skyward, the antagonist draws inspiration from the Black Widows who obsessed him as a child to transform a mass of storm clouds into the Mind Flayer. The sequence, impressive, shows the extent of the power of Vecna. The monster stands before him like a pupil before his master.
Eleven then understands that all past events have been controlled by Vecna. If he is not the very creator of the Upside Down, the former guinea pig from Hawkins’ laboratory is its most powerful being. He managed to give life to a real ecosystem. An ecosystem that he uses as a weapon to better terrorize the inhabitants of the city.
