Season 4 of Stranger Things contains its share of memorable scenes. One of them comes in episode 8, when Will (Noah Schnapp) and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) exchange a few words in the back of Argyle’s (Eduardo Franco) van. The very moving scene shows the young Byers cheering up his best friend and hiding his real feelings from him.
While not explicitly stated on the show, Will’s sexual orientation is one of the questions left unanswered, at least for now. However, this sequence confirms half-word the love that the hero has for his childhood friend. Under the compassionate gaze of his brother, Jonathan (Charlie Heaton), Will fails to express his feelings, which causes him to feel deep sadness and many tears.
Although many viewers were touched by this moment, others criticized the creators for not completely accepting the coming out of their character.
“The Duffer brothers say Will’s sexuality will be addressed in Season 4. Eventually, he doesn’t even come out or talk about his feelings. It’s horrible to do that and lie about it. He deserves better.“
However, the way in which the Duffer brothers take on the subject is much more realistic than one might think. It is important to remember that the series takes place in 1986. At that time, it was even more difficult for a person – who is moreover a 15-year-old teenager – to reveal his homosexuality.
The showrunners are not unaware of all the issues and prejudices of this period, choosing subtlety over revelations made verbally. They also come to underline the evolution of Will with the role of Jonathan. Through a simple look, the eldest appears as an understanding character and sensitive to the questions of his little brother.

In the following episode, the last of season 4, the two Byers brothers find themselves in the kitchen of a pizzeria. Isolated, they indulge in confidences. Jonathan uses an old anecdote to broach the subject. “You asked me more often for my help. You used to come and chat, but you don’t do that anymore”, he admits. The pole set by Jonathan is obvious, but it is still difficult for Will to speak.
Matt and Ross Duffer confirmed in a recent interview that the fifth and final season of Stranger Things will focus on Will. No doubt the creators will be able to further explore the character’s quest for identity.
