Stranger Things 4: the bluffing transformation of David Harbor for the flashback scene

David Harbor has revealed the surprising facial prostheses he had to wear while filming Jim Hopper’s flashback scenes for Season 4 of Stranger Things.

Warning, spoilers! This article reveals key plot elements of Season 4 of Stranger Things. If you haven’t seen Part 1 of Season 4 and don’t want to be spoiled, don’t read on!

David Harbour, the interpreter of Jim Hopper, has shared surprising new photos from season 4 of Stranger Things on his Instagram account. They reveal that he actually wore a facial prosthesis for some scenes. Explanations.

Season 4 picks up six months after Season 3 ended and finally reveals the fate of fan-favorite police chief Jim Hopper. He has well and truly survived his supposed death at the end of Season 3. A scene shows him in flashback jumping sideways moments before the explosion that Joyce (Winona Ryder) claims killed him.

During season 4, we therefore discover that Hopper is being held captive in a Soviet prison. It is a much thinner Hopper that appears, with a shaved head. In an Instagram post, the actor reveals that in order to film the flashback scenes showing how Hopper survives the explosion, he had to wear facial prostheses so that he looked the same as in Season 3.

David Harbor lost a lot of weight to play a Hopper who’s been imprisoned for six months at the start of Season 4. And since the Duffer Brothers hadn’t yet written that flashback scene when the explosion scene was filmed, they didn’t. were of course not able to film it.

At the end of s3, I told the Duffer brothers that we should shoot the flashbacks after he “died” because I was going to lose weight and there would be continuity issues. But they [les scripts, ndlr] were not yet written. Luckily we had the miraculous @barriegower who came along and gave me a “fuller Hopper” face. I hate prosthetics, but Barry/the team made them as painless as possible,” the actor wrote.

He then thanks the head makeup artist and the head hairdresser, who made sure that the scene where Hopper has his hair shaved is successful. Because they only had one take! When you click on the arrow to see the different photos in the post, you can measure how impressive and successful the transformation is.

Although, as David Harbor explains, it would have been easier to film those flashback scenes at the same time they were filming Hopper’s “death” at the end of Season 3, the Duffers obviously didn’t have everything. totally figured out how the character was going to survive.

Hopper’s transformation between seasons 3 and 4 makes the character’s time in the Soviet prison believable by giving a clear sense of how malnourished and abused he is. It remains to be seen what is next for Hopper and Joyce in part 2. We hope to see them escape from prison and reunite with Eleven and the rest of the gang.
