Stranger Things 4: why the final episode lasted 2h20? The creators respond

The ninth and final chapter of season 4 of “Stranger Things” stands out as one of the longest episodes for a series. The creators, Matt and Ross Duffer, explain their choice.

While it totals more than a billion hours of viewing on Netflix, season 4 of Stranger Things has pushed the limits of the spectacular on the small screen. Ambitious and dense, this fourth part is also the longest. Each episode lasts more than an hour, as for the very last, it reaches 2h20, the classic duration of a blockbuster in the cinema.

Asked by Collider on this choice to offer an XXL episode – one of the longest ever made for a series – the creators justify themselves: “We couldn’t find the right moment to cut because there is almost an hour of escalation, then the action goes on for an hour and finally, 25 minutes after the final confrontationexplains Ross Duffer. It wouldn’t have been satisfying to end the episode after the first hour.

He pursues : “We didn’t want to have to force an ending, so we just decided to do this monster episode. But if you want to take a break, go ahead..” The showrunners have already revealed that season 5 will be much shorter than season 4, but will it also be cut into two volumes? Their answer sows doubt. “We didn’t write thinking of a split”, says Matt Duffer.

Mismatch Stranger Things 4: errors in the Netflix series

We’re lucky that the seventh episode ends with the revelation about Vecna, it’s a matter of luck. But it was already complicated to release seven episodes for the month of May. It was one of our biggest challenges. The co-creator clarifies that if Season 5 contains a new split, it will have to arrive sooner. “I would like to see all eight episodes at once, but it’s true that people talk about it more when they are divided.”

The creators will begin writing Season 5 the first week of August. To discover the rest, we will therefore have to be patient.

Stranger Things is available on Netflix.
