In episode 7 of season 4 of “Stranger Things”, viewers learn that time has stopped in 1983 in the Upside Down. How can this anomaly be explained?
Stranger Things has yet to reveal all of its secrets. However, in episode 7 of season 4, a major piece of information reshuffles the cards: time does not flow in the same way in the Upside Down.
As Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Robin (Maya Hawke), Eddie (Joseph Quinn) and Steve (Joe Keery) move through this parallel – and oh so disturbing – environment, the small group heads to the Wheeler house to recover weapons hidden in Nancy’s room. Mike’s sister discovers, to her great surprise, that they are no longer in their place.
She finds shoes thrown away years earlier, her old wallpaper and even a diary that stopped at November 6, 1983. This fateful date corresponds to the disappearance of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) in the very first episode of the season 1.
It is very likely that the presence of a foreign human being in the Upside Down caused a dysfunction in the development of this environment which reproduces, almost identically, the real world. This does not mean, however, that the Upside Down was created in 1983.
ELEVEN AT THE ORIGIN OF THE UPSIDE DOWN WORLD?
Four years earlier, in 1979, Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) gets rid of Henry Creel (Jamie Campbell Bower) by opening a portal. The parallel universe already exists, but in a completely different form: there is no city, only mountains and clouds in a blood-red atmosphere.
Several questions arise: when did the Upside Down become a replica of reality? Is this identical reproduction the work of Vecna who wanted to recreate Hawkins?
In a recent video released by Netflix, the series’ production designer, Chris Trujillo, confirms that the Upside Down is frozen in time from the moment “Eleven inadvertently created the parallel universe”. However, no information in the series specifies that the heroine is at the origin. This mystery will perhaps find its resolution in volume 2.
