The Paris court has ordered the blocking of pirate IPTV services from Internet service providers (ISPs). The LFP is delighted with this decision. But is it enough? How do they intend to block IPTV?
It’s done, the Paris court has just pronounced, on March 17, 2022, the blocking of pirate IPTV services from Internet service providers. Behind this legal action, the LFP – the organizing body of the Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 Championships – intended to block IPTV services and other IPTV boxes which broadcast football matches to the detriment of official competition broadcasters.

How does the LFP plan to block streaming sites?
As you probably know, your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can see your IP address as well as the data you provide. This is what allows access providers to identify and block access to certain services and sites. Typically, they perform DNS blocking. However, it is usually quite easy to bypass these blocks by using a VPN or changing the DNS. They believe, no doubt, that this is a significant technical obstacle for the majority of offenders.

Since 2021, the state’s anti-piracy artillery has evolved. Hadopi no longer exists, an overhaul of the fight against piracy has been passed and it bears the name of Arcom. This new measure retains its graduated response mechanism, which consists of gradually warning Internet users that their IP address has been seen recovering a pirated cultural work. The arsenal has also been adopted for new uses, the Arcom must be able to deploy against illegal streaming sites and Internet television offers (IPTV).
Thanks to this court decision, the LFP will be able to notify ARCOM much more easily so that it requests the blocking of mirror sites and sites as soon as possible. The blacklists addressed to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) can therefore be updated very quickly, so that the ISPs block the criminal sites and that the search engines dereference these sites. At the same time, there is also a device to fight against mirror sites which is planned to counter, or at least limit, the efforts undertaken to circumvent these measures.
Hadopi was able to push Internet users to abandon P2P in favor of DDL or streaming. Now it is IPTV that is targeted. However, uses continue to evolve. From now on, the illegal broadcasting of matches is happening more and more on social platforms and networks, such as Discord or Telegram for example.
