Almost two weeks ago, the Writers Guild of America reached an agreement with the studios in a dispute over wages and rights.
Now the authors have also agreed to the agreement between the union and the studios.
The US screenwriters approved their new collective agreement with a large majority. In the ratification process, 8,435 members voted for the new treaty and only 90 against it. The screenwriters have thus clearly accepted the agreement negotiated by the union with the Hollywood studios and finally ended the strike.
The preliminary agreement was communicated on September 26th and the authors have resumed their work, but the agreement still had to be confirmed by the union members. Screenwriters in the USA had been on strike for almost five months.
More money and new rules
According to the “Writers Guild of America” announcement, the new agreement runs until May 2026. The contract includes wage increases, regulations on the use of artificial intelligence and higher subsidies for retirement and health care.
However, the agreement with the screenwriters does not mean that all strikes in Hollywood have ended. The actresses are still on strike. Negotiations between the studios and the actors’ union have not yet resulted in an agreement.
