The main union of actors in Hollywood has just abandoned the table of discussions with the major studios.

Nothing is going right in Hollywood anymore. The global nerve center of film and series production, which was already facing a strike by its screenwriters, would be about to see the actors join them.

“Insulting” responses

The discussions were tense between SAG-AFTRA, unions of Hollywood actors, and the major production studios united within the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP). After 4 weeks of fruitless exchanges, the union finally decided to stop the fees and to stop the exchanges.

AMPTP’s responses to the union’s most important proposals have been insulting and disrespectful of our vital contribution to this industry “, is it explained in a press release. The salaries offered by the giants of the sector would in particular be considered to be clearly insufficient. In the big names thus pointed out, we can find Apple, Netflix, Amazon or historic houses such as Warners Bros., Disney and Paramount.

A union of 160,000 actors ready to strike

SAG-AFTRA must now validate the start of a strike which could cause great harm, the union representing nearly 160,000 actors. Together with the screenwriters of the still angry Writers Guild of America, they would then reproduce a movement that had not taken place for more than half a century, since since 1960 there had not been a joint strike between the two corporations.

As you can imagine, the impact should be immediate on the series being filmed. If some teams have succeeded so far in continuing the work based on scripts already written previously, once the actors are on the picket line, it will be impossible to take the slightest image. Some have thus taken the lead, and the Emmy Awards ceremony, whose 2023 edition is scheduled for September 18, could be postponed to November, or even to 2024.
