Strong increase in January attendance at Zurich airport


Zurich (awp) – Continuing the recovery posted last year, Zurich airport saw its traffic take off in January. Compared to the corresponding month of 2021, the number of passengers welcomed on the Kloten tarmac more than tripled (+212%) to 898,094. This level, however, remained almost half lower – i.e. a decline of 42% – than that posted in 2019 before the health crisis linked to the coronavirus pandemic.

Over the month under review, the number of local passengers stood at 622,334, while those in transit represented 30.4% of the whole, or 271,978 travellers, indicated Thursday Flughafen Zürich, the company in responsibility for the operation of Zurich airport.

The number of air movements more than doubled (+129.4%) compared to January 2021, i.e. 12,741 take-offs or landings. It represented 59.8% of the level presented over the same month in 2019. The average number of passengers per flight reached 89.6 travelers, or 12.9% more than twelve months earlier. The seat occupancy rate rose 8.8 percentage points to 54.4 percent in January.

A total of 322,236 tons of cargo were handled at Zurich Airport in November, 36.1% more than a year earlier. Compared to November 2019, a decline of 8.2% was recorded.
