Strong outlook – look to the future: Five new cars at CES

In 2023, the CES technology fair will serve as a major stage for the auto industry, which will be presenting several new show cars. This year, however, not only playful studies with vaguely hinted at self-driving technology and visionary display worlds will be shown, but also specific cars that present close-to-production solutions as a whole or in parts.

Afeela e-sedan Sony presented a new e-car concept at the CES in 2020. At first it remained open whether the technology group wanted to indicate that it would go under the car manufacturers. It was not until early 2022 that the Japanese officially gave the go-ahead to become a vehicle manufacturer. A few months later, Honda was named as a cooperation partner. The subsequently founded joint venture Sony Honda Mobility (SHM) has now unveiled a near-series prototype at CES and announced the new brand name “Afeela”. In 2026, the 4.90 meter long sedan with self-driving technology, giant displays and electric all-wheel drive is to be launched on the US market. With how much horsepower, how much range and at what price, SHM is not yet revealing.VW ID.7The Afeela could become a serious competitor for another CES car novelty: the VW ID.7, which will be presented at the technology suit presented. In a particularly complex process, the electric sedan was painted with 40 layers, which ensure an extraordinary bling effect: When electricity is supplied, the outer skin, which is divided into 22 segments, glows in color. With these light games, the officially in the Wolfsburg-based company starting the market at the CES arouse a little additional curiosity. In addition, with the camouflage suit, VW keeps the option open to present the final design again in a media-effective manner. VW has also held back with technical details so far. It is known that the sedan will offer a range of up to 700 kilometers and a revised operating concept with climate control that is easier to access on the touchscreen.BMW i Vision DeeThe BMW i Vision Dee is also a pretty mixed bag. It’s a retro-futuristic sedan that also features a color-changing exterior paint job. A total of 32 tones can be displayed thanks to this e-ink technology, which in combination allows almost endless design possibilities. While the color change technology presented last year in a monochrome version at the CES has no chance of mass production, elements from the interior of the Dee should be found in models from the brand in the near future. This includes the renewed head-up display , which replaces all conventional screens in the study and will go into production from 2025. Then there will be BMW models with bare dashboards, with all driving information mirrored in the windshield. And that across their entire width. RAM Revolution Concept pickups gave the CES a wide berth for a long time. But since the mighty loading masters have also been driving electrically, new representatives of this genus have been appearing more frequently at the Tekkie Show. Like the RAM Revolution Concept, which gives an outlook on the RAM 1500 BEV series model expected for 2024. The study is based on the so-called “STLA Frame” platform with twin-engine all-wheel drive and 800-volt architecture. This enables a charging capacity of up to 350 kW and a range of 160 kilometers to be refueled in 10 minutes. RAM Trucks does not make any statements about battery capacity and range. Visually, the study stands out with new light graphics including the illuminated lettering “RAM” in the radiator grille. There is also a two-part giant display for the infotainment system. The lower part can be removed, the upper move.Peugeot Inception ConceptThe Peugeot Inception Concept is a five meter long GT that presents itself as futuristic both inside and out. At the same time, the study shows technical solutions that are already close to series production or will at least be available in series vehicles in a few years. Before the end of 2023, the Stellantis Group will be launching e-cars that, like the Inception, are based on the “STLA Large” platform. In the case of the Peugeot study, this basis offers a 500 kW/680 hp all-wheel drive and a 100 kWh battery that allows a range of 800 kilometers. The Inception also features a new steer-by-wire steering wheel called Hypersquare. It has a rectangular format, a touchscreen in the middle and four circular cells in the corners. The latter serve as universal handles and controls. This solution should be ready for series production before the end of this decade. (SPX)
