Eating a hearty breakfast can help you keep your weight off, according to a new study. We reveal why that could be.

Nutrition tips are now a dime a dozen. And the research doesn’t seem to be in complete agreement when it comes to the correct prevention of obesity: Some nutritional concepts recommend skipping breakfast, while others again declare the morning meal to be the most important of all. Scientists from the Psychoneurobiology Section of the University of Lübeck have now joined the second group: According to the results of their research, a hearty breakfast is said to help maintain weight.

In the morning like an emperor?

For their laboratory test, the researchers first gave 16 normal-weight men a low-calorie breakfast and high-calorie dinner and then repeated the test the other way around as a control. Your conclusion: In the morning, the subjects’ bodies burned 2.5 times as much energy as in the evening. It didn’t matter how many calories were eaten.

“The increase in blood sugar and insulin levels was significantly reduced after breakfast compared to dinner,” says nutritionist Juliane Richter. The researchers assume that this genetic daily rhythm is maintained even if you change your diet, e.g. on a diet.

Less cravings through breakfast

In addition, it was observed that a hearty breakfast curbed cravings (especially sweets) throughout the day. On the other hand, those who only consumed a few calories in the morning tended to have significantly more cravings instead, which is bad for both weight and blood sugar. A follow-up study will now also investigate whether overweight people can also lose weight more easily with the help of breakfast.

With regard to the results, it should be noted that only a few subjects were examined and the study was conducted under laboratory conditions, not in everyday life. Still, there’s no harm in testing the method if you want to maintain your weight.
