  • The life expectancy of Swiss people had deteriorated significantly in 2020 due to the corona pandemic.
  • However, it has since returned to pre-pandemic levels, according to Germany’s Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research.
  • Life expectancy has not yet recovered worldwide in the last year.

The research team headed by Jonas Schöley notes that the differences between the countries have become greater. This is the result of data from 29 countries.

A particularly tragic example is the United States. The mortality rate for people over 80 has normalized there; however, it has increased among younger people.

Only in a few countries in Western Europe has the risk of death faced by the population within one year returned to pre-pandemic levels. This applies to France, Belgium, Switzerland and Sweden. Experts speak of the period life expectancy.

Differences between East and West

The mortality risk in Eastern Europe worsened between 2020 and 2021 compared to Western Europe, the researchers note. In Bulgaria, for example, period life expectancy has decreased by 3.6 years compared to pre-pandemic levels.

The research team locates the reasons for the gap between East and West in the vaccination rate and in the differences in the health system and general living conditions.

Overall, the losses in life expectancy due to flu epidemics since the 1950s have been significantly smaller than due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Covid-19 has triggered one of the worst mortality crises worldwide in the past 100 years.
