Do you drink your coffee with milk and sugar? Or preferably black as the night? According to a study, your drinking behavior says a lot about your mental life.

Whether you drink your coffee black, with milk or sugar was previously a matter of taste. Like researchers from the University of Innsbruck now in a study have discovered, however, there is a deeper meaning behind your drinking behavior.

Study: Black coffee = black soul?

As the research suggests, people with psychopathic behaviors prefer coffee that is black. A psychopath is defined here as a person who has propensities for everyday sadism, narcissism, and aggression. The scientists asked around 500 participants about their tastes, after which they filled out four different personality tests.

The result: Everyday sadism, as well as other psychopathic traits, have been consistently associated with people who prefer bitter nuances. That also means that psychopaths like gin and tonic, dark chocolate and beer. Conversely, this means that sympathetic and cooperative people do not like bitter substances in food.

Does that mean that we are all supposed psychopaths if we like bitter substances? We find: As long as the connection between psychopathy and bitter foods is unclear and unproven, we continue to drink our black coffee – and skilfully ignore the first psychopathic tendencies.
