If you don’t want to be bored on a train ride, you can prepare for it at home and download these apps.

A good book or magazine can help pass the time during hours of train journeys. But if you want to carry as little as possible in your luggage, you have countless possibilities to distract yourself with your smartphone – because this is always with you anyway.

Exciting stories

The train ride is a great way to immerse yourself in an audio book, for example. Popular apps for fans of stories read aloud or radio plays include the applications Audible, BookBeat and Audiobooks by Deezer. In all three apps, audiobooks can be downloaded in advance and enjoyed while driving. This means that users do not have to consume any data volume while on the move. While Audible purchases individual titles, Audiobooks by Deezer and Bookbeat use flat-rate models. All the alternatives mentioned also offer free trial periods.

Better a little music

If you want to listen to music or sometimes podcasts instead, you can rely on one of the apps from the well-known music streaming providers – including Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer or YouTube Music. With all the alternatives mentioned, users can access millions of songs for a monthly fee and stream songs, albums and playlists directly or download them beforehand. Many providers also offer free variants, which, however, are limited in their range of functions and advertise.

Watch films or series

There are also several alternatives for film and series fans, including Amazon Prime Video, Netflix, Apple TV + or Disney +. Again, a lot of the content can be downloaded in advance and then viewed offline. All of the services mentioned have films and series in their program that can only be seen on their premises. Amazon and Apple are offering free trial periods to familiarize yourself with the offer. Otherwise, depending on the service, there are different costs per month or year. By the way, users of YouTube Premium also download videos and watch them offline.

Countless games

In the App Store and the Google Play Store, there are of course countless games that are wonderful to pass the time. There are, for example, entertaining games with a train theme, including an implementation of the classic board game “Ticket to Ride”, which is also known in Germany as “Ticket to Ride”. Another alternative might be “Mini Metro”. Here, players have to keep a growing city’s underground network running.
