  • As part of the European Championship qualifier, Switzerland defeated Bosnia-Herzegovina away with 23:25, 25:23, 25:18, 25:19.
  • After winning the second set, the Swiss are visibly relaxing in Sarajevo and are now the dominant team.
  • The Swiss continue on Sunday with the home game against Romania.

In the beginning, the Swiss volleyball team was still sluggish: Coach Mario Motta’s team quickly lost 4:9. The guests were able to reduce the deficit to 18:19. But after the equalizer had been missed several times in a long rally, set 1 was lost anyway.

The 2nd round was balanced until 19:19, before Switzerland managed the decisive difference with 2 points in a row. Thanks to a 25:23, the set equalization was a fact.

The block suddenly as a weapon

The set win seemed to visibly inspire the Motta team, which had to do without the injured key player Jovan Djokic. From then on she clearly dominated the Bosnians. In the 3rd as well as in the 4th round, the favorite was able to break away from the home team early on. Also the block – still non-existent in the starting sentence – worked the longer the better. Ultimately, the 1984 Olympic city resulted in a sovereign four-set success.

This is a successful start to the EM campaign for the 2023 tournament. Switzerland has never qualified for a final tournament. In order to buy the ticket for the European Championship, the venue of which is still open, the Swiss must win their group of four or place among the top 5 of the 7 runners-up. The second game will take place on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. in Schönenwerd against Romania (watch it live on SRF).
